Come to the 2nd Philosophy Symposium this afternoon! Theory and Activism and Fall Philosophy Course Offerings: Wednesday March 5th in the Howry Building at 4:30. All are welcome to join in our second Philosophy Department Symposium as we gather to share pizza and refreshments and discussion. What became clear at the first symposium was that, for a number of students, theory and practice, or theory and activism, are seen as being in a kind of opposition: youre either thinking or youre doing, standing apart from the world and reflecting on it or working to change things. So, what wed like to do in our second symposium is tackle this perception and the questions it raises head on: What is theory? What is practice? What kinds of questions and objects of study can motivate critical practices? What forms of activism do certain theoretical stances invite and/or prohibit? Can philosophy and political analysis as critical practices be agencies of social change without reproducing their own authority? How does academia relate to, support, and/or undermine political pursuits? At the end of the symposium, the philosophy faculty will also discuss the course offerings for the Fall, particularly as these relate to the discussion.
