Compline – What priests do when you do not see them: “All present, including the nurses, were amazed at the instantaneous manifestation of the power of the Holy Spirit.” After a hectic weekend I was dreaming of preparing my own version of the mouth-watering Nigerian suya beef this evening. Suya is basically beef fillets spread over with peanut butter on both sides, sprinkled with some spice and roasted. It was 9 pm and as I stepped out of the rectory headed for the Mall, I ran into this sad-looking family waiting by the door. It turned out that the mother had had a premature baby, who was diagnosed with anemia. And they wanted me to come immediately and baptize the baby. There goes my evening and the Suya dream. We left for the hospital. I never knew that a premature baby could smile but this one did immediately after the baptism. The baby was all movement as if it was dancing and actually opened his eyes. All present, including the nurses, were amazed at the instantaneous manifestation of the power of the Holy Spirit. The mother was so excited. I pray that this baby survives; that would more than make up for all the suya in this world. This is an example of what most priests do at those times when people do not see them. Priests do not spend their time preying on children as the unbelieving world would like us to believe; priests spend their time baptizing babies and anointing the sick unto eternal salvation.
