Concerned about the drought? Here are some facts to know: The City of San Luis Obispo’s water supply remains reliable and secure, despite the Governor’s recent declaration of a drought emergency. Our multi-source water supply strategy is paying off, even though 2013 was the driest year on record. Assuming historical drought conditions, and applying this month’s reservoir storage levels, our water projection modeling estimates that there are about 7.5 years of water currently available. Mandatory conservation actions would only occur in the last three of those years. Historically, the worst drought period in San Luis Obispo occurred between 1987 and 1991, with an average rainfall of 13 inches per year. In comparison, the average rainfall for the last four years was approximately 20 inches per year. The City now has five water sources to meet community water demand: Salinas, Whale Rock and Nacimiento Reservoirs, recycled water (for irrigation) and groundwater. Your investment in this multi-source water supply allows for responsible use even following the driest year on record. But as with any precious resource, water should still be used wisely and efficiently.
