Congratulations to Michael E. Lynch, research historian at the U.S. Army History and Education Center in Carlisle, PA. Yesterday at Temple University History Department, he successfully defended his dissertation, “’Sic ‘Em Ned’: Edward M. Almond and his Army, 1916-1953,” which I hope will eventually be revised and published as a book. It is high time we had a full-length biography of that controversial, oft-vilified, and yet highly accomplished soldier, and Michael has certainly done the research necessary to pull that off. Michael is also the twelfth student I have managed to guide to his Ph.D. By the way, the photo here was taken five years ago. I am afraid the Ph.D. process has turned Michaels hair completely gray. This is not the sort of work for the faint-hearted.
