Consider the context of the writers of the new testament. During this time - ALL marriages were arranged marriages, where the bride had no choice in her husband. For us to understand what it meant for them to make a statement about the "bride" of christ would necessitate different lenses than our current american ones. This is what we do as american christians however, we apply our current societal context to the text of the bible, written in an ancient time where the rules of engagement were much different!
