Continued from my last post..... Muhammad, for instance, ran into a cave to hide from the angel Allah sent to enlist him in the service of the divine. Jesus had to face his fears about his calling. There is a story told of Graham Greene, the great contemporary British novelist whose characters struggled with their conscience and faith. Greene had waited nearly three years to get a fifteen minute appointment in Rome with the contemporary mystic saint Padre Pio. (Padre Pio died in 1968 and was canonized in 2002). Just before their appointment, Greene attended a Mass that Padre Pio was leading and observed the priest at prayer. Then without keeping the appointment, he returned to England. When asked why he had left before meeting Padre Pio after waiting so long to meet him, Greene allegedly responded that he was not prepared for the the way that man could change his life. In other words, Greene knew that his soul would be called, that it would take charge of his life. The only way to try to prevent that, he felt, was to try to keep grace and divinity at a distance.
