Convenience voting is voter suppression. It’s the new thing! Take away the neighborhood polling places and ask the voters to drive miles to find a place to cast their ballot! The voter turnout was a dismal 12% four years ago in this election. So I had a long talk with the Mayor about it. He cited that so many people early voted or voted absentee that this was the natural progression. In fact less than 20% turned out early or absentee and 80% plus voted in their neighborhood voting places on Election Day, so why were we turning our back on our traditional way of voting? He cited the expense of manning those polling places and the cost to have those polling place. They had to have internet available and it was just too expensive. I asked about using the schools? No the School District charged too much to use their facilities. “Oh there will be 12 voting places around the city for people to cast their ballots” the Mayor said. The three City Council races that are up for election are Districts 3, 5 & 6. Five polling locations are in Districts that don’t have City Council elections There are 4 polling places in District 6, two in District 3 and one in District 5. Yes, there will be just one polling place in District 5,the largest City Council District, and of course it will be in the far west corner of the 7 mile long district, right in the neighborhood of the incumbent, Gil Sorg. How convenient. District 3 is the smallest district in the city and of course, the incumbent has a polling place in her neighborhood and three more just over the edges of her district. This is bordering on corruption. If you hide the polling places, then the 8o% who vote on election day will not turn out and we are guaranteed to have the same politicians in office for another 4 years. The Good Old Boy System is alive and well in Las Cruces. We should be celebrating an election, promoting it, encouraging the voters to get out and vote. Unfortunately, the City does nothing to promote an election, except to make it harder to find a place to vote. Mr. Mayor and City Council, you should be embarrassed about this. Reinstate the traditional polling places and bring justice back into the election process.
