Corey stated about the lyrical themes covered on .5: The Gray Chapter: Theres a story there, but theres no outline. Its almost like a Quentin Tarantino movie — when he jumps around in time and kind of shows you whats going on. Thats kind of what this album is. It doesnt start with one period and go in a linear fashion. Its just kind of where it made sense. Each song tells a different little part of it, but you have to kind of look at it as a whole. He continued: I didnt wanna do a concept album, because wed already done one with [my other band] STONE SOUR. And I wanted to do something… It was just autobiographical, really. And some of the songs are about Paul, and some of the songs are about the hell that weve had to go through in dealing with his loss — especially from a very emotional point of view. Ive been using the term war of emotions lately, because it really is. When youre trying to reach that point where you can accept it… because at first you dont want to… Theres a lot of emotions that go through your mind and go through your heart. Theres a lot of guilt — almost like a survivors guilt. Theres a lot of anger towards the person you lost, this person that you really cared about. Theres a lot of anger towards yourself. And theres a guilt that comes from that as well. Because you feel terrible. You feel, What more could have I done? It drives you nuts after a while. Anyone whos ever lost anybody can understand what Im saying. And you really kind of have to reach that point of, you just take that deep breath and go, Okay, everything that needed to happen happened, and theres nothing I can do about it. And thats what this album is; its us showing the emotions that we went through and then, at the end, just basically kind of standing back up and going, Okay, I guess now we carry on.
