Freedom is not an open road with your life stashed in a rucksack on your back; though this experience is certainly a useful one. Freedom can be working fifty hours a week, running a business and a family. Freedom can be unemployed and virtually penniless. So what on Earth is Freedom? Today I am a free man. Of course the reply to this is, ‘How can you be free, without endless buckets of cash? But the statement is, ‘Today, I am a free man.’ Today I have enough…’enough’ being what I choose it to mean. Being free of greed and endless needing is part of the Freedom equation, for sure. But the most important part of freedom is having a ‘Free’ state of mind. To me that means seeing, assessing and reacting to the present with a simple mindset that looks for the beautiful in what Life offers us; our creations, our expressions, Mother Nature, the sky, the sea and the rolling country. It means being able to spend time among people that I feel comfortable with and enrich me, as opposed to being in a situation that seems to bleed me dry with every waking hour. Freedom to spend my work and leisure time doing something that fulfils me and others, though there are times we must endure weeks that lead to a better place. Freedom is also knowing that if you were picked up and dropped anywhere on Earth among people, you would survive, like that hitch hiker. Finding yourself thousands of miles from home and friends is an experience which brings you right back to your essential needs as an animal on the planet. These times teach you the rest is all pretty much superfluous bullshit…and what a mess it leaves behind. The best travellers leave only footprints and enriched soil behind them. True Life Insurance is found in your solar plexus. If you can centre your life so that everything rests within your heartbeat, your mental capacity, your breath, your body and your spiritual entity…You are complete. You need nothing more than water and bread. You are a free human being and you have discovered freedom. Today, I am a free man. To get here I had to lose everything and everybody it seems over and over again, until at last, I was left with just me… centred on the moment now…this most important one… right now…talking to you. Something about loss is linked with Freedom, don’t despair. There are no horrors I am afraid of anymore. I’ve discovered such joy in the simple pleasures of life; they sustain me through the darker times. I feel privileged to be here today, with legs that walk and a mind that can choose which direction to go. Freedom is a long journey to a place you only know you’ve reached once you are there, because it’s not listed on any road map you’ll ever buy. It’s a beautiful place, trust me. Though, remember Freedom doesn’t come with a good salary and pension rights built in…well it does…but it lasts for one day only…Today. Today, I am a free man, with the free winds blowing through my life and Freedom stretching out as far as my eyes can see. For those that seek it, take heart each time one of us arrives. I only spread these thoughts that they might encourage others to seek their dreams and thus help mine; which is, to make the world a more peaceful place as I journey across it through time, with my words, my deeds and my art.
