Cost of the Indo-Naga War Estimated Part One Human Cost Amsterdam, January 5 2013: The Government of India (GOI) has neither released official nor unofficial figures of the human cost of the six decades old war it unleashed on Nagaland in 1954. Practically unknown internationally this probably longest running war of modern times has Indian journalists repeating, one after the other, a death toll of 25.000. Without mentioning the number of casualties on either side the GOI and media don´t take the by the Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR). documented figure of 300.000 perished Nagas into account. There is no mention of a body count or injury count of the Armed Forces of India side but just the astounding figure of 300.000 Naga deaths. Consequently for the GOI questions like this unfold: - What is the reason for the Government of India to withhold these figures? - What is their reason to withhold deaths and casualties of the Armed Forces of India? Even though peace talks between India and Nagaland have been going on for the last 16 years and to date have not had any tangible result, the secrecy around the overwhelming human cost of war should be known if only because India is a Democratic Nation, therefore accountable to its people. This is so not only with respect to the tremendous number of deaths on both sides, numbers of slain Indian soldiers have not been released, but also with respect to the yet unknown but surely larger number of soldiers and civilians who were injured, tortured, maimed and invalidated many of which are unable to work. Hence the Naga International Support Center urges the International Community to broker peace between India and Nagaland, to mediate in ending this seemingly endless war by: - Sending a fact-finding mission to factually determine the human cost of the Indo Naga War - Presenting the results to the United Nations, the Indian Government, to the National and International Media - Mapping out and establishing the amount of casualties of this war on both sides, publishing the results internationally and demand accountability For more information visit nagalim.nl or email us [email protected]
