The Navghar Road police in Bhayandar (E) have arrested a couple who posed as police personnel and attempted to extort money from slumdwellers, by accusing them of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. The woman, Anu Jha, 35, who resides near IC Colony, sells government stamps outside Borivali court and is familiar with legal paper work. Her accomplice, Rishikesh Prasad, 30, resides in the Ghodbunder MIDC area of Thane, and scouts for people needing help in legal paper work, whom the two of them can con. However, eager to make a fast buck, Jha and Prasad decided to turn extortionists and went to a slum colony near a school at Ideal Park in Mira Road late Monday evening. Telling the slum-dwellers they had parked their jeep on the main road, Jha and Prasad introduced themselves as police personnel who were on special duty. They accused the local residents of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and demanded documentary proof of their nationality. When the slum-dwellers failed to produce the relevant documents, the accused demanded a sum of Rs 20,000 from each of them as protection money. However, an alert resident, Abdul Mandal, got suspicious and called the Navghar Police Station. Mandal felt something was amiss. While the accused were threatening some other locals with action, he sped to the main road in search of the official police jeep they said they had parked, Senior police inspector Dinkar Pingle of Navghar Police Station said. Not finding any police vehicle around, Mandal called us. We then rushed our men to the spot and arrested the two for impersonation and extortion, Pingle said. Jha and Prasad were produced before the Thane court the next day. They have been remanded in police custody till Friday, the police officer added.
