Cuba - Uganda Friendship Association Global campaign against 16 years of injustice on the Cuban five During the 10th International Colloquium for the Cuban Five and against Terrorism, the world continues to witness the height of 16 years of injustice against the Cuban Five. In the blind and manipulation of media, since liberation Cuban citizens continue to suffer from repeated experiences of kidnapping, assassinations, and bombings of hotels in Havana killing tourists all with ill intentions of destabilizing the country to eventually bring down the leadership and government of the revolution. It is unfortunate that the US due to selfish policies has since long paid a deaf ear to these terror acts, and allows Miami to provide a safe heaven for the perpetrators. As problems continued to surface, the leadership in Havana saw it wise to open relations with US on combating the threats. In May 1998, the Cuban government through Gabriel García Márquez, Colombian author and Nobel Prize winner as a liaison was sent by Comrade H.E Fidel Castrol to engage US government on basis of mutual coorperation on the fight against this terrorism. The US responded and the FBI delegation went to Havana in June of that year receiving a dossier on the terrorist groups operating in Miami. However on 12th September 1998, in ‘response’ of US - Cuba government engagements, armed officers burst into residences of Rene Gonzalez, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Rabanino, and Antonio Guerrero, threatened, traumatized their families, and sentenced them to a total of four life sentences plus 77 years, the first kind in the US history. Despite the lack of sufficient evidence, unfair trial with much irregularities just as ruled by the UN Working group on Arbitrary Detentions, pervasive community prejudice, government misconduct and negative publicity, even after appeals in 2009 the Supreme court refused the review of the case which would have perhaps led to the revocation of the unjust sentences. This case has just unearthed yet another form of injustice in the US legal systems which raises many questions on its credibility on promotion and protection of human rights and global peace. It has however proven people’s power in fighting for the weak and isolated just as the Five brothers. We congratulate Comrades Rene and Fernando for finally achieving their freedom and strengthen the spirits of all Cubans and its solidarity network for the struggle well fought. Today we join our brothers and sisters in Havana in the long journey to free Gerardo, Ramon, and Antonio, the whole world needs to be aware of this and more unjust situations in the US legal proceedings. Publicity and information dissemination should be intensified for enlarged accountability in the case. Its high time, The US administration to reconsider its position on the case of the cuban five and terror activities orchestrated by Cuba-American groups in Miami; The current President Obama administration should remove the economic blockade, devise a new line of approach and policy towards Cuba. This has to be pro-people for the best of both governments with their peoples; We call upon all African people to respond positively towards this issue and join in all activities of solidarity with the families of the five and government of Cuba; Aluta continua Comrade Rugarama Daniel Chairman, Cuba - Uganda Friendship Association, Chairman - National Executive Committee, Pan-African Movement - Uganda National Chapter
