DAILY WALK September 20 2013 DO LIKE JESUS …. TAKE A SINNER TO LUNCH When I was living with my back turned to the will of God and doing things that should not have been done, I knew that I was in spiritual trouble and had slipped away from God. I was a very public person and many people saw me for the double minded hypocrite that I was. Sadly, the good church people were only too happy to point out my faults, but unwilling to throw me a life-line. The world did not see the spiritual struggle going on inside of me, but God did, and He sent a little Catholic nun to invite me to a Cursillo. A Cursillo is an intense three day encounter with Jesus. Without thinking, I agreed, and I had too much pride to back out. It changed my life. The priests and laymen, who put on the weekend retreat, saw a rough cut diamond and reached out to me in love. They put up with my worldly nonsense and accepted me where I was. They too had walked in my shoes, and they knew that it was not necessary to point out my faults or reject me. Instead, they pointed me to Jesus and introduced me to Him in a new way. I have been criticized from time to time for hanging out with some pretty colorful folks. One had a rough mouth. He was disabled and I would drive him around sometimes to run his errands. Once I got tired of his language and told him that if he didn’t stop I would stop helping him. He then reached across my van and poked me in the ribs with his cane saying, “That’s the trouble with you ‘born agains’, the first time the Lord sends you a tough case, you give up.” That dope slap from the Holy Spirit showed me how churchy I was becoming. Before the beginning of time, God saw every sin we would ever commit and yet He was pleased to hang out with us. He didn’t wait for us to clean up our act before He sent Jesus to die in our place. What would we think of a doctor who refused to help sick people until they made themselves healthy? Would we seek out a nurse who thought we were too yucky to treat? I think that one of our greatest rewards in Heaven will be a Saint coming up to us and saying, “Thanks. I am here today because you treated me like a real person.” May Jesus Kiss Your Heart Bill ambassadorsofjoy.org
