DID YOU KNOW? In the 1982 FIFA World Cup, the Poles edged out the USSR (a “Dream Team” of stars from Dynamo Kiev, Dinamo Tbilisi and Spartak Moscow) for the semi-final spot on goal difference thanks to a 0–0 draw in a politically charged match, as Polands then-Communist totalitarian government had imposed a martial law a few months earlier to quash internal dissent. During that tense match, some of the supporters of the Polish football team unfurled Solidarity banners in Spain in the match between both teams. The organisers took them away at the insistence of the angered Soviets, whose television service was covering the finals.
