DS Awareness Month Post # 14: My son co-teaches a class at BU School of Medicine. He gets to ask the medical students a question and they ask him one in return. Sometimes there are questions for me but I am in the background typically. Today, a student asked what my biggest fear was. We were discussing independence prior to her question so I answered that my greatest fear at this time was giving him more space and having faith that those around him in the world will treat him right. Letting him do more on his own increases his interactions with folks without my supervision or assistance. He has to figure out how to get his point across. He has to figure out how to ask for help if needed. He has to figure out who has his best interests at heart and who doesnt. I have to have faith that he will make good choices. I have to have faith that folks will treat him with kindness and respect. I have to have faith that we taught him to advocate for himself appropriately. I have faith in Isaiah and his abilities. I have faith in people in our community who know and care about Isaiah. I hope the world doesnt let me down. I hope the big scary world around him treats him kindly. I hope the big scary unknowns stay far away. Fears change through the years. I was afraid when he was a baby, he would be a sick kid forever. As he got older the fears changed. When he was 8 years old, I thought he would have behavior issues for the rest of his life. When he was 13 years old, I was afraid he would never have good friends. Here we are....age 18. He isnt sick, he doesnt grab folks by the face or hair anymore, and he has amazing friendships. Fears are still with me but how I define them keeps changing. I think fears just keep us on our toes. Fears are a part of it all....we all have them and at some point, we leave one fear and move on to a new one without realizing the transition even took place.
