# DU BEAT 4 Things to remember before you choose NOT to vote! In the past fifteen days we’ve witnessed all types of electoral politics from nomination to promotion, from campaigning to manifestos, from forced friendships to flattery, from peaceful rallies and slogans to bloodshed and violence. The college foyers, corridors and canteens are laden with pamphlets like the roads are with withered leaves in fall. The ambience of colleges has been far different from a place of studies with slogans being shouted, promises being made and allegations being levelled. All of these unique shades bind into unison soon bringing about a spectacular picture of indomitable courage as the culmination of these efforts is almost here, the election day of September 13th, 2013. So if you’re sitting down on that couch, planning an extended weekend assuming Friday to be an off, what follows should be an eye opener for you. There’s labour put, though you may not wish to see it We’ve criticized candidates. We’ve gone to the extent of calling the whole concept of elections to be flawed. But one thing that needs to be credited is the zeal and enthusiasm the candidates have shown by campaigning in the horribly humid weather, facing cold unresponsive faces and battling the odds of unforeseen lurking danger. If not for anything else, respect the candidates’ and activists’ labour and go to cast your vote. That’s the least you can do. If you don’t perform your duty, you lose your right too Voting in the polls is not matter of your wish but an obvious duty of all eligible voters. Thus, if you are laggards in performing your duty or exercising your right to elect the ones who make decisions for you, eventually, you lose the right to criticize. If you find politics a maligning activity to be associated with anyhow, remember when you aren’t a part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. Don’t underestimate the power of Single Vote It is normal to feel that you not voting won’t make a substantial difference to the poll results, but remember the entire ocean is made up of water drops. If everyone sits back, then there would be zero foot fall and the entire exercise will become futile. Hence, vote and inspire others to vote too. You never know when your vote gets as powerful as a ‘veto’. ‘No Known Candidate, We won’t Vote’ Problem! At times, it is observed that certain courses or social class of students choose not to vote as no one from their course or college is contesting. Friends, think about what’ll happen to a country’s economy if the voice of a certain strata is unheard and ignored. There’ll be upheaval; a disequilibrium. That’s what happens to the poll results, they become one sided. Vote for someone you feel capable; talk to teachers, read material on the internet, but do vote. Remember every year overall lakhs of rupees are spent on the election procedures and paraphernalia. Make sure you vote and don’t scuttle this value to nothingness and make elections a mockery. Again, this is the least you can do, electing the people you find worthy. After all, “Kaun kehta hai aasman mein suraakh nahi hota, ek patthar to tabiyat se uchaalo yaaron!”
