Daily Manna: Bitter End Of Negative Assumptions: Sunday 20, October 2013 TEXT: JUDGES 15:1-8 KEY VERSE: “And her father said, I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her” (Judges 15:2). Omar Nelson Bradley, one time U.S. Army General and first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff had this to say about war: “The way to win an atomic war is to make certain it never starts.” There are no surer ways to start wars than entertaining and acting on wrong and negative assumptions. Consider the story of Samson and his Philistine in-laws. Samson had left the house of his father-inlaw in displeasure after his bride betrayed him by divulging the clue to his riddle to the Philistines which cost him thirty garments and his prestige. Here, he returned with a kid as a token to reconcile with his wife but was prevented from his mission because his wife had been given to his best man. The offer of his wife’s younger sister was unacceptable and did not mitigate the treachery. Samson was so incensed that he set the entire cornfield of the Philistines ablaze. The aggrieved Philistines turned their anger against Samson’s wife and her father whom they burned with fire. Still not appeased, Samson went ahead to slaughter the Philistines mercilessly. Samson’s father-in-law gave away his wife to another man because he “verily thought” that Samson was no longer interested in her. Often, when we make negative assumptions about other people, it is a reflection of unfair bias that we have towards them. This usually results in regrettable actions which may snow-ball into a severe damage. If Samson’s father-in-law had adopted a positive and conciliatory attitude, the calamity might have been averted. Genuine love will prevent the ‘atomic wars’ that we witness often, for love “thinketh no evil” and “casteth out fear”. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Presumption is deadly. ***Share your thoughts and what youve just learnt in the comments section below.
