Daily Nutrition Tip: There are many foods Americans eat that are banned in other countries. One of them is farm raised salmon. Wild salmon get their beautiful pink/orange color from their diet of krill, which lend an abundance of nutrition to the salmon. When salmon are raised on a farm however, they are fed corn and man made food pellets. This diet is much lower in nutrients and does not provide the nutrition needed for the salmon to naturally develop their vibrant color. Farm raised salmon are an unappealing shade of gray and because the fish is unrecognizable without its pink color, their food pellets have canthaxanthin added to them, a chemical that causes the salmons flesh to develop a pink tone. This chemical is manufactured by giant pharmaceutical companies and has the potential to damage vision. Farm raised salmon are banned in Australia and New Zealand.
