Dawn News: Unregistered colleges go unchecked by NABEEL ANWAR DHAKKU about Mulhal Mughlan Academic Places. CHAKWAL, Oct 2: Many unregistered and unaffiliated colleges are fleecing poor parents and playing havoc with the future of hundreds of students, it has been learnt. Mulhal Mughlan, a town situated 30 kilometres away from Chakwal city, has four unregistered and unaffiliated colleges. There is a college in the local market having the bombastic name of “Oxford College”. The prospectus of the college also carries the picture of Oxford University’s building giving the impression that it is an extension of the world’s prestigious university. The college principal said they sent admissions through Chakwal College of Commerce as their institution was not registered and affiliated with any university. However, when Mr Khaliq was asked about the picture of Oxford University on the prospectus, he had no comment. Three other such colleges - Al-Muslim Science College, Ghazali College and Mulhal Science College - are also operating in this town. Al-Muslim Science College does not offer science subjects and its principal Mulazim Hussain says he is running the institution as an academy. Ghazali College is being run by a driver, Shabbir Ahmad, who also says that he runs the college as an academy. Mulhal Boys Scinece College has only two teachers to conduct the classes of FSc. Chakwal Girls College operating in the Chakwal city is also not registered and affiliated. “Why my result card carries the word ‘private’ even after I studied at Chakwal Girls College for two years,” a student complained. The poor and gullible parents, who are not aware of the standard of colleges, are being fleeced by these unregistered and unaffiliated colleges. The career of many bright students is also being destroyed by these fake educational institutions. The registered and affiliated colleges which facilitate these illegal institutions in sending their admissions are indirectly encouraging fake institutions. They get extra fee for sending admissions of the students of unrecognised institutions. When contacted, District Officer (Colleges) Prof Liaquat Kahoot said the government was going to set up a ‘Private Educational Regulatory Authority’ which would keep check and balance on fake institutions.
