Day 2: There are 1000s of CSAs around the world. The first CSA began in Japan, in what is called teikei, which philosophically translates into “food with the farmer’s face”. It was started by a group of women concerned with the use of pesticides, the increase in processed and imported foods and the decrease in the farm population. Our Market will soon celebrate World Food Day. The theme this year is Family Farming: Feed the World, Caring for the Earth. We will launch our version of a CSA- as a cooperative- meaning different famers under one family, The Green Market. We will serve our community of supporters like you. On Sun Oct. 12th, we highlight our farmers, present our CSA project and will have agricultural and environmental organizations to share their knowledge. On Sun Oct19th, we invite the families and launch the CSA program with the UN FAO. What is a CSA? Simply, a “Farm Share”- very much like buying a magazine subscription in which a “member” buys a “share” of a farmer’s harvest at the beginning of a growing season. They pay a subscription for a given period of time. Each week, our Green Market families will pick up their “share” of the collective harvest at a given distribution point.
