Day 7. Part 2 of facing adversity: When the past holds us back... Change, resolutions, even evolutions of who we are require facing the pressure of the past that holds us back. When it hits, we can be convinced that itll never be different, its just who I am, I just cant, etc... When the scale doesnt move, the old thoughts intrude, and even if your efforts are just not seen by others who matter, we can be devastated & shattered. In family therapy, we call that homeostasis. It is like a train going down the tracks. You could lay a car across the tracks and that train will just carry it down the tracks a long way before it stops. Even good changes can seem ineffectual or insignificant when that old momentum carries away our thinking or makes our work seem pointless. This can be one of the hardest parts of any productive change, to face down those demons that would tell you to quit, tell you its hopeless. This is where journals of your successes, support from friends or family and even self help materials can help you regain perspective. It may require that you claim your changes with those you love, and ask them to notice or see the difference. It may be that you need to claim, perhaps even brag about the extra pound you lost, the extra rep you got in, the grade you got last semester, etc... Heaven forbid, but you might need to even celebrate and make a big deal out of the small things that keep you going in the right direction. Breathe in the movement you make and expect others to share it, believe it, live it with you. Dont let it go. facebook/triunecounselingservices
