Dear RILPBN, I am emailing you on behalf of the Theatre and Performing Arts Department at Brown University to invite members of the RI Latino Professional Business Network to see our production of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize Winner Water by the Spoonful, written by Philly native and Latina author Quiara Alegría Hudes. On September 26th, Hudes will host a post-performance Q&A session, which is free and open to the public. We as a department thought the show would be interesting to people involved in the Latino community here in Rhode Island. This brutally honest and deeply heartfelt play touches on themes of community, addiction, violence and how we rebuild ourselves and make family in a 21st century world. Depending on the number of people who would like to attend, we would be happy to offer group discounts or possibly free tickets! The play will be performed at Leeds Theatre, 77 Waterman Street, Providence, RI 02912 on Sept 26 - Oct 6, Thursday-Saturday @ 8pm, Sunday @ 2pm For more information, visit our website or contact us via Charlotte Thomas-Davison at [email protected] Water by the Spoonful tells the story of Elliot Ortiz, a young Puerto Rican marine recently returned from Iraq. As the play opens, Elliott is working at a Subway sandwich shop while attempting to become an actor; his cousin, Yazmin, a music professor is recently divorced and their aunt Odessa (actually Elliot’s birth mother) runs a chat room for recovering crack addicts like herself. A sudden crisis forces them to work together and overcome obstacles as a family. In this compassionate yet brutally honest play, each of the characters learns to embrace the challenge of living honestly and openly in a world filled with unintended risks and unexpected pleasures. Spoonful explores how we make family in a 21-century world. Regards, Emily Boney Marketing Assistant Brown University TAPS
