Dear Richard, The devastation from Typhoon Haiyan has been immense. The latest report from the United Nations says that over 11.5 million people have been affected by the typhoon – many of them displaced, injured, even killed. Its at times like these that Im blown away by the compassion of the Oxfam community – so far, thousands of supporters like you have stepped up to help families in the region. With your help, we hope to reach 500,000 typhoon survivors. Thank you so much for all youve done and continue to do. Right now, our teams of local and international staffers are on the ground in the hard-hit provinces of Cebu, Leyte and Samar. In Cebu we have already delivered essential goods like soap and blankets to thousands of people – and much more is on its way. One of the greatest challenges is reaching the people who needed help the most. Roads are blocked, and communication access was cut off by the storm. Now, roads are being cleared. Aid IS starting to get through. And because of supporters like you, Oxfam is there. In the coming days and weeks, Oxfam is planning the following emergency relief efforts: Distribute household water filters, which can clean dirty flood water and make it safe for drinking. Distribute food, or provide cash where food is available locally, so families dont go hungry. Hire local survivors to help clear debris, giving them a source of income while improving access to communities in need. Install temporary toilets which will help prevent the spread of disease. Provide plastic sheeting to give people basic protection from the elements. Help farming and fishing families regain their income sources by providing tools, seeds and nets. As the scale of this crisis becomes clear, we will adapt our response to ensure we can best support people in desperate need. You can help us be ready for whatever comes next – tomorrow and in the months ahead – by becoming an Oxfam America monthly donor today. The long-term support of our monthly donors enables us to respond to emergencies the minute they happen and fuel our work in places where poverty and hunger doesnt make it into the headlines. Become a monthly donor today to support Oxfams programs in more than 90 countries. >> When disasters strike, Oxfam is there – and youre there with us. Supporters like you dont stand by silently while others are suffering. As you continue to stand with typhoon survivors in their hour of need, we want you to know how grateful we are to have you with us at this crucial moment. Thank you so much for being a part of this community. Sincerely, Raymond C. Offenheiser President Oxfam America
