Dear Veronica, It is with great pleasure that we announce today, California Governor Jerry Brown has signed Assembly Bill 1559 making California the fourth state in the country to pass legislation to screen newborns for adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). The governors office proposed an amendment to our bill that will delay testing until ALD has gone through the federal newborn screening approval process. We accepted the amendment fearing the governor might not sign the bill. We were initially disappointed, however, our mission was accomplished: newborns will eventually be tested, diagnosed, and treated for ALD in a state with the highest birthrate in the country.
