Debunking the debunkers. This article criticises Richard Dawkins comments about Easter being named after Ishtar (goddess of the morning star). It claims that Easter is not named after Ishtar, because it is named after the German Goddess Eostre. On the Wikipaedia page the article links to, however, the name Eostre is said to be linguistically cognate with numerous other dawn goddesses attested among Indo-European language-speaking peoples. These cognates lead to the reconstruction of a Proto-Indo-European dawn goddess; the Encyclopedia of Indo-European Culture details that a Proto-Indo-European goddess of the dawn is supported both by the evidence of cognate names and the similarity of mythic representation of the dawn goddess among various [Indo-European] groups” ie the name of the goddess of the dawn (Venus, the morning star) is the same in religions from Iran to Germany. The article below says that Ishtar is not pronounced Easter, but Ishtar. This is true (in 21st century English) but irrelevant, as the original pronunciation of all the goddess names is actually closer to Easter, from Germany to Iran.
