December 1st: KDL RESULT: Cedar Galaxy Killarney 2-V-1 Tralee Athletic In what was both teams second meeting in the league, the first ending in a draw, the home side came from behind to take all 3 points in Celtic park Sunday morning last. Both teams will also meet again in the semi final of the challenge cup for the right to meet a strong looking Dingle outfit in the final. Both teams started brightly with the Tralee side snapping at the heels of galaxy players putting great pressure on the ball at every opportunity and creating a few half chances through Joe Kinsella and Jason Quirke. Both catching the eye any time they were near the ball. Mike Murphy and John Foley were working tirelessly to create openings for cedar but Foley was unable to convert any of the chances in a tight first half. It was the Tralee sides pressure that paid off as the press on the galaxy defence by Luke Reidy led to him nicking the ball off a defender and using his blistering pace then put a ball across the box causing confusion only for the ball to be put into the net by one of the Killarney sides defence, one nil on the forty minute mark. The half finished with Athletic one goal to the good. For the second week in a row a different galaxy emerged for the second half looking shaken up by the half time hairdryer treatment. Owen Kerrisk Mike Murphy and Dwayne Griffin looked a lot more threatening in the middle while the back line of Ger Foley, Pa Murphy and Darragh ORegan playing higher up the field to sniff out any danger and allow the middle men to push on. The tight Athletic back line marshalled by Eoin Sugrue John Ryall and Neil ODonnell were finally broken 15 minutes in to the second half, as slick play by Owen Kerrisk combining with the outstanding Joe Donovan who fed solskjaer like super sub David McSweeney to return the ball to Kerrisk to rifle past Athletic keeper Brian OSullivan who himself was solid between the sticks. Galaxy always looked more likely to get the game winner as Ger Foley was like a colossus at the back neutralising any attack while half time sub for Tadhg Ryan, who picked up a dead leg, Johnny Murphy was always making himself available on the left as Brendan Savage, Matt ODowd and John McGillycuddy were working hard for the visitors. The Cedar pressure being camped in the opposition half finally paid off, as Joe Donovan found Dwayne Griffin in the box and he coolly slotted past the Tralee keeper to take the lead with ten minutes remaining. A great first goal for the club by the former Mainebank maestro . Griffin then made way for Tomas Groves as galaxy looked to further shore up the defence and seal out the game with what has been the tightest defence in the division thus far. Despite throwing everything but the kitchen sink looking for the equaliser Rory Byrnes troops were unable to find it in what was a high paced competitive encounter throughout which was excellently controlled by Jason McCarthy , whom was making his KDL debut, definitely an excellent addition for the league referees. Stand out for Galaxy were Mike Murphy, Ger Foley and Joe Donovan, while for Athletic Joe Kinsella, Jason Quirke and Luke Reidy always looked lively.
