December 28, 1950: Blue-eyed soulster and pop music master ALEX CHILTON is born in Memphis. In 1966, he began working with Memphis soul group, The Box Tops, scoring a #1 hit with The Letter (Mala) at the tail end of the Summer of Love in 67. After numerous top 40 singles, including a #2 with Cry Like A Baby, CHILTON left the group in 1970. By 72, he had formed power-pop legends, Big Star, with Chris Bell. Big Star didnt have any hit records, but their influence on pop music is still felt to this day and it will remain CHILTONs legacy. He died in 2010 at age 59.
