December 31, 1943: BIRTHDAY -- Henry John Deutschendorf Henry John Deutschendorf established himself as a major songwriter in the late 1960s including writing one of Peter, Paul and Marys most successful hits, Leaving on a Jet Plane. In 1971, he began his rise as a solo artist, a gifted singer-songwriter who, for better or worse, put West Virginia on the map and through song made folks associate Colorado with getting high. He also made thousands of Orioles fans thank God they were country boys. Of course we know Henry John Deutschendorf as John Denver.
