Divergent is a very strong original film that actually really surprised me. Ive never read any of the books so I went into this film last night at my screening thinking it would be a Hunger Games rip-off (completely different from Hunger Games by the way) plus the trailers didnt interest me that much but coming out of it, it really freaking surprised me. It was a very outstanding original film. The cinematography to the film looks gorgeous and its actually very well-filmed. Its also surprisingly very well-executed, it doesnt feel jumpy or messy or anything like that. Its nice to see Shailene Woodley doing her first ever big budget film who does such a great job as the lead role. Shailene really carries the movie and just gives an awesome performance. Miles Teller (who coincidentally starred with Shailene in The Spectacular Now) was really good in this film but its weird because everytime those two are on-screen together, I still see that lovely couple I cared so much for in The Spectacular Now but its not something that distracted me or anything, it was just a little weird haha. Theo James is pretty good as Shailenes love interest (of course these types of movies just have to thrown in romance every time - one of my flaws with the Hunger Games movies. I love romance but these type of movies thrown them in my face in my opinion). Kate Winslet, while very underrused, is really good as the evil corporate woman. Jai Courtney (A Good Day To Die Hard, Jack Reacher, I Frankenstein) was so evil and unlikable in this film but yet he acts that viciously awful role so well. All of the performances are really good actually. The storyline was actually really interesting and very captivating. The training sequences/action sequences were awesome and beautifully shot. The characters were very well-rounded and the finale is absolutely fantastic. Neil Burger does a splendid job directing this film, he kept the movie moving very smoothly and uses impressive camera techniques to make you feel immersed into the film. My only problems with this film would be that it does run a little long, the ending is a bit rushed, and the unnecessary romance just to please the teen audience. I actually heard that this movie is pretty much spot-on with the book from a few people at my screening. This film is such a pleasant surprise for me for someone who has never read any of the books and it earns my Outstanding rating. If you love the book then Im pretty sure youre going to love the movie. If youve never read the book, you still might be able to enjoy the film. I really hope this movie does well at the Box Office this weekend because I would really want to see 2 & 3 now.
