Divine Providence or Luck? Last week was a hard week for the Russell clan. Sunday the 17th, my wife, Anita, lost her father with his burial following by several days. Her mother who has passed over a year ago would have celebrated her birthday Sunday the 24th. After church, I asked her if she would like to ride out to Gigis grave site. She agreed, so we struck out. On one of the two lane blacktop roads between Walthall and Mantee we saw two trucks come into view about a half mile away. The larger of the two, a 3/4 or 1 ton, tried to pass the smaller one. When the larger truck came even with the smaller one, it appeared that a drag race was in progress. The larger of the two was in our lane approaching at a rapid rate of speed. When the larger one noticed that we were in his lane, he locked the brakes. The rear of the truck disappeared in a cloud of blue/gray smoke. We were forced to pull onto the sholderand into the ditch to avoid a head-on collision. When we were in the lowest part of the ditch, I looked up to see the truck, still sliding, pass us on the road. Immediately ahead of us was a drive culvert which could have resulted in some serious damage. Somehow we returned to the road before impact with the culvert and continued on our merry way. Monday, as I returned home from the Amory area, I had a chance to see the site of the near miss. There is NO WAY to have gone off the road, into and out of the ditch and returned to the pavement in the space marked by the skid marks without Divine Intervention. The moral to the story: til He calls you home, keep making a difference no matter how small.
