Diwali then...contd And while the crackers were roasting in the sun, the issue of how to split them amongst the 3 siblings arose. As we progressed in age, our preferences changed. Earlier we were afraid of loud crackers and we preferred colourful displays of sparklers etc. But then we got bolder when we saw the others and next year wanted louder bombs. Soon a barter system ensued based on the perceived value of each item. For ourselves and for others. We learnt day trading quite early too Another great thrust area was to maximise the fun for each item. This was achieved in a variety of ways. We had all the time in the world and wanted each one to last as long as they could. So the bombs were never ever burst in a string. The string was broken up into individual bombs that could be burst one by one thus prolonging the fun for longer period. Besides defragmentation we also ensured that each cracker was burnt by one sibling / friend at one time. So if I was attempting touching the agarbatti to the bomb, my siblings and our friends all stood and watched and partook of the fun by audience participation. And who can forget the fun we used to have in emitting loud bursting sounds with our mouth scaring the cracker buster Another way of extending the fun was to place bombs inside a covered container. While the smaller ones would barely tickle a coconut shell the larger ones would sent it flying one floor high and landing farther away. For the larger bombs a tin was bought into play. For the Red Forts it was a Nescafe tin of 50 or 100g. The Rassi bombs packed enough punch to hurtle a Bourvita dabba all the way sky high. All of us jumped up and down in uncontrollable joy. Rockets were put into bottles and the most popular being the milk bottles. The Jam bottle were deemed to be too large mouthed thus not directing the rocket in upward motion. We were learning elementary rocket science quite early. More to come.... Venkat
