Jambo! [Hello] Wanted to thank the family/community/village for supporting and participating in our efforts to provide a cultural guide to assist in incorporating the Nuguzo Saba into our daily lives beyond the kwanzaa observance The Umoja 1st Cycle of Harambee na Nguzo Saba commenced on Sunday December 28th. Wanted to also take this time to invite feedback and/or reflections on how you were able to integrate this cultural idea into your day-to-day lives of practicing the Nguzo Saba Value System beyond the seven days of Kwanzaa. The seven Harambee na Nguzo Saba Cycles cover 49 weeks. The remaining three weeks of the year, is used to prepare and gather for Kwanzaa, Dec.6th - Dec.26th, when the Harambee na Nguzo Saba Cycles begin again. The Harambee na Nguzo Saba Cycles will provide ever deepening meaning and the structural guideposts for us to PULL TOGETHER AROUND THE SEVEN PRINCIPLES to not only stride for greatness, but to THRIVE, and bring forth the best of what it means to be African in the world. Umoja / Unity: The commitment to building and maintaining unity in the family, community, nation and race To Join together in solidarity Family centered interactions Intergenerational discussion, planning & action Family & Individual Display attitudes of mutual respect and cooperation Maintain intra-family communications Actively support and encourage each family member Speak and act as a unit Community, Nation & Race Strive for group consensus Support national, racial and cultural movements & activities Concepts / Ideas Harmony Interdependence of life Unity is natural Intergenerational relationship Expanded Definitions of the Seven Principles Umoja (unity):To strive for a principled and harmonious togetherness in the family, community, nation and world African community. Umoja. Operational unity: A practical, principled unity that expresses itself in a pragmatic togetherness on 5 levels. 1.Unity of self: clear goals and objectives, organized methodology; consistency; self-control; a striving for progressive improvement . 2.Unity of family: support by/for family members; family meetings to facilitate a high level of communication and informed decision making, clear family goals and objectives; organized mechanism to facilitate negotiation, compromise and conflict resolution. This applies to both immediate biological and extended families. 3.Organizational unity: organization that places more emphasis on agreed upon theory and practice than on internal disagreement and conflict. This philosophical approach to organization unity should be practiced by organizations internally as well as with other organizations. 4.Unity in the community: this state of unity manifests itself in the coming together of the various organizations, institutions and programs in the community in a collective agreed upon plan of action. A plan of action that has all the features of the organizational unity referred to above. 5.National and world unity. The coalescence of unified local and national organization and the masses. This last stage of cultural unity lays the basis for a protracted struggle to realize the other six values. UMOJA - UNITY THIS IS THE FIRST PRINCIPAL OF THE NGUZO SABA AND IT IS THE CEMENT AND GLUE, THE ONE THING THAT WILL BIND US IN SPIRIT, MIND AND BODY. WITHOUT THE [U-N-I] THERE CAN BE NO [T-Y], (UNITY). WHEN WE ARE CONFRONTED WITH FORCES THAT WOULD TRY TO CREATE CONFUSION AND DISUNITY, WE MUST EMBRACE THIS PRINCIPLE FIRST AND FOREMOST. LET’S ALL AGREE THAT OUR ULTIMATE GOAL AND WORK IS THE LIBERATION OF AFRICAN PEOPLE FROM WHATEVER CHAINS OF DESTRUCTION THAT MAY TEMPORARILY BIND THEM. THE ONLY TRUE FORM OF IMPRISONMENT IS IMPRISONMENT OF THE MIND. SO THE PRINCIPLE OF UMOJA ASKS THAT WE MUST FIRST DEVELOP LOYALTY & TRUST IN OURSELVES AS AFRICAN PEOPLE AND THAT OUR CULTURE IS NOT A MIRROR OF ANYONE ELSE’S CULTURE – IT IS THE BELIEF BASED ON UNCOMPROMISED GOAL OF LIBERATION AND UNCONDITIONAL FREEDOM FOR ALL BLACK PEOPLE. #KwanzaaChallenge2015 Will you join our challenge?
