Does anyone have advice or a connection to a private school that might help my friends Hester Blum + Jonathan Eburne? Here is their predicament: We are so grateful to all of you for trying to help us. Here are the details of our situation: Jonathan and I both teach at Penn State, and plan to spend this coming fall semester in Paris. He has leave from PSU, Im on an NEH fellowship for the year. Wed planned to enroll our 8-yr-old in public school when we arrived, as wed been assured we could do. On Friday we went to DC to get our visas, and although we had presented all the paperwork that the French consulate in DC had officially requested, according to their website, we were told at our appointment that we could not be granted a visa because we did not have a letter from the director of Adelaides new school (which we never knew we needed, as the consulate information never specifies that information anywhere). We cannot get a letter from the director of a new school because we are not in France to enroll her in person. Its a catch-22, presently. We were able to get in touch with someone at the maire on Friday before it closed, and were told that they wont enroll Adelaide for a half year. This was surprising and bad news. So now we are scrambling to find a private school that will take Adelaide, and do so quickly enough that we can get our visas approved in time for our (gulp) Aug. 21 flight. If we dont get the visas in time we will have to change our tickets, which I learned today will cost us $2300. Or else only go to France for less than 90 days. So far we have written to the following four schools in the hope that they will be willing to take Adelaide (and let the visa office know in time to grant our visas): Ecole Active Bilingue Jeannine-Manuel, EIB-Monceau, Eurécole, and Cours Molière. There are a couple of other fancy schools with tuitions in the five figures that we cant afford, but these four are more reasonable. Some of you have suggested others Ill look into, as well. It may well be the case that the local mairie would enroll our daughter when we arrive, but the consulate wont let us leave until she is officially enrolled, it seems. Catch-22, as I said...we are very very thankful for your help...
