Does the state have any legitimate basis for authority over the - TopicsExpress

Does the state have any legitimate basis for authority over the individual? Does that answer change if you swap out individual for corporation, or church, or family? Do people who wish to opt out of participation in a given states laws and norms likewise opt out of the benefits provided by that state? Is there a solution to the problem of the tyranny of the majority? Can - and should - personal convictions trump social mores? Discuss... politely, please. (I will assume a cursory working knowledge of the subjects touched on in the linked article as a prerequisite for playing.)
