Empowering yourself is to give power to the people :: ------------ A mechanic Mr Hamid Pius Jasmin is the pioneer in rural electrification in Sabah-he made a 3kw hydro generator to service 16 houses in Kg Libang, Tambunan in 2003. In 2008 various government agencies combined to do another hydro in the same village(see report below). The big question is: why after politicians officiated the hydro generators which proved to be effective to light up the remote villages, - somehow there are no more government effort to build more hydro generators for the thousands of remote villages which are surviving in the dark now? The cost of hydro generator is not high - Mr Hamid spent about Rm8000.00 to do his hydro-which is a very low cost construction. If this is multiplied the whole of Sabah can be lighted up with a small fraction of the official allocation made for rural electrification of Sabah - which came to Rm1 billion! Lets do the maths here: Sabahs population (2013) : 3.6mil proportion of houses without main grid electricity supply=1/4 Number of Sabahan without electricity =3600000/4=900 000 Assume there are 4 to a house, no of households=900000/4=225000 If it cost Rm8000.00 to service 16 houses, The cost of electrification/per household=RM8000.00/16= Rm500.00 Therefore the cost of electrification of 225 000households=225kX500 =Rm112.5mil =11.25% of official rural electrification allocation! Assuming that the official allocation do provide more electricity or use better material to service the rural people -say it costs 100% more than Mr Hamids generator (3000w/16=200w/household)-the cost will come to Rm225.00mil =22.5% of official allocation. Tell us why the micro hydro solution is not adopted by the government which seems so generous in making allocation but fail to implement it on the ground?
