Doug Bench Douglas “Doug” Alan Bench of Dallas passed away Jan. 21, 2014, following a six-year battle with kidney cancer. Doug was born Jan. 14, 1956, in Victoria. He was the youngest son of Vernon C. Bench Sr. and Ewen Jewett “Judy” (Reeves) Bench. He grew up in Greenville and graduated from Greenville High School in 1974. Doug earned a bachelor of science degree in music from East Texas State University. He also attended the Southwestern Baptist Seminary. After leaving Greenville, Doug worked many years in the banking industry. He worked four years with the First City Bank-Highland Village and Westheimer Plaza in Houston. He later became a consumer loan officer for the First City Bank of Richardson. At the time he became ill, he was employed by Ryan, a leading global tax services firm with one of the largest indirect and property tax practices in North America. Doug’s true passion was music, and his pursuance of it became a lifelong joy. Doug was selected for the Texas All-State Choir in his senior year of high school, and he participated in multiple Greenville High School musicals, including “Fiddler on the Roof.” He was a member of the Blackland Players musical group in Greenville, and later in life Doug performed anywhere from AstroWorld in Houston to the Guava Bomblets Comedy Troupe in Dallas. Along with his talent for performance, Doug also had the gift of composition. He spent many years writing trance music, gospel music and stage musicals. His musical “Temps” had a staged reading at the White Rock Bath House Cultural Center. He was also chosen as the “Cool Composer” in the April 2003 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine’s “Cool Issue.” Doug is survived by his life partner of 14 and a half years, Robert Shaddock; his father, Vernon C. Bench Sr.; three brothers, Vernon C. Bench Jr. and wife Judy, David E. Bench and wife Karen, and Richard W. Bench and wife Sherry; and numerous nieces and nephews, family members, and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ewen Jewett “Judy” (Reeves) Bench. A celebration of Doug’s life will be in the chapel of the White Rock Community Church, 9353 Garland Road, in Dallas at 3 p.m. on Feb. 8. Visitation will be at Crosspoint Fellowship, at 2401 Jack Finney Blvd. in Greenville from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30.
