Dr. Mr Adams: I am writing you after our phone conversation. As you know, I want my children, Fiona DeVries and Aislyn DeVries, placed in the same classroom. There is overwhelming evidence published verifying twins flourish when together. Your opinion they will be distracted by each other and dependent upon each other is contrary to many studies. I believe they will be more distracted and in fact have a more stressful school experience being separated, left to wonder where is my sister, what is my sister doing? Why were we separated? Did we do something wrong? I know the social support they give each other will only benefit them in their education in in these early years of their schooling. Forcing them to separate sends the message something is wrong with being a twin. Being a twin is not an unhealthy dependency, as some would make it out to seem. It does not exclude outside relationships nor does it suffocate individuality. My girls bond is what gives them the confidence to be and grow as individuals. It is a gift which should be valued. Furthermore, I am committed to my children’s education. No one can deny the benefits of parents who are wholly committed to and involved in their children’s education. Volunteering in the classroom, donating supplies, communicating with the teacher, and chaperoning are all things I can contribute a great deal more attention to when my efforts are focused in one class rather than two. I have enclosed with this letter a copy of New Jersey Statute 18A:36-38. Please note lines 19-22 stating: The school principal shall provide the classroom placement requested by the parent or guardian and the students shall remain in this initial placement for the duration of the school year. Sincerely, Mary DeVries
