Drama Bites - The Three Trials of Azdak By director, Shell McKenzie We’re two weeks into rehearsals for The Three Trials of Azdak and our designers are running around like headless chickens – organized, talented, headless chickens to bring together a show that should look quite spectacular. Pink carpet, gold arch, (not so) sensible heels and champagne coming out of the nostrils. Sounds like a party to me! Our cast are also working super hard in rehearsals. We’re bringing a fresh take on Bertolt Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle to the stage, making a secondary character, Azdak, our beautiful strong female lead. But before we could do so, we kicked off week one by going back to the source itself, and reading the full Caucasian Chalk Circle. That was quite a bit of fun for the first rehearsal – Brecht knows his stuff! Plus the cast were having fun playing and reading characters which they won’t play in our show – for a moment I thought perhaps we should chance our piece and do the FULL play with ALL the characters in the 15 minutes time slot, our cast could do it! … But maybe we’ll stick to our current piece. Week 2 has left us all with a good taste in our mouths. We’ve been knuckling down and starting to form and shape the piece. We have our draft script in hand and been finding our groove with it. Up on the floor the first two scenes are underway! The trials from Brecht’s original work that we chose to use in ours are scarily close to cases that we read in our newspapers everyday. We spent a good chunk of time discussing these cases in our first week of rehearsals – and it was so interesting to see the whole cast so passionate about the justice or injustices of them. There were even a few points where tensions raised and there was a debate amongst them. Which is fantastic! This is what I want the audience to feel, and be a part of.
