During my 9 hour ordeal, I eventually had to abandon my car and walk home (in a safer spot than the middle of the road ... I got lucky). People (including myself) were pushing people out of ditches, making sure each other were OK, giving helpful advice, and generally taking care of each other. On one particularly bad hill, 5 teenagers were standing guard to push people over the ice. I taught a handful of people the deflate your tires for traction trick (one of the few times being a Yankee was appreciated) I had 2 people give me a lift down various roads to make my walk a little shorter. I slipped and fell on the ice (3 times), and each time someone yelled are you OK???? Everyone was communicating with each other in a polite/helpful way. Most folks have no experience driving on ice, most folks were scared/terrified, but most folks made sure their fellow man was OK. Good job Birmingham, I AM IMPRESSED!
