During the last quarterly period (1st July to 30th September 2014), 187 UK stranded cetaceans (representing at least 14 species) were reported to the CSIP- this figure is broadly comparable with those recorded during the same period in the preceding four years, with the exception of an increase in strandings of short-beaked common dolphins. The largest number of cetaceans were reported in England (n=74), followed by Scotland (n=62), Wales (n=44), Northern Ireland (n=4) and the the Isle of Man (n=3). One stranded leatherback turtle, one indeterminate identity marine turtle and one basking shark were also reported in the UK during the same period. Twenty seven cetaceans and the basking shark were examined at post-mortem- further details of the strandings and the necropsies will be given in the UK annual report for 2014.
