EARLY BIRD NEWS WITH Orange Uganda: ACTING UNEB CHAIRPERSON APPOINTED: Prof Mary Okwakol, the Vice Chancellor, Busitema University, is the new chairperson of the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB). According to Hamis Kaheru, Uneb spokesperson, Prof Okwakol will act as UNEB chairperson pending the appointment of the substantive chairperson by President Yoweri Museveni. Her appointment by the board yesterday follows the resignation of the former Fagil Mandy. Mathew Bukenya’s contract as the body’s executive secretary was also renewed until November 2015. FORMER NSSF BOSS’S CASE IN COURT RESUMES: The hearing of the case in which former board chairman of National Social Security Fund (NSSF), Geoffrey Onegi-Obel, is accused of corruption-related charges is to resume today. Onegi-Obel is facing charges of abuse of office and causing financial loss of about UGX8 billion to the Fund, in connection to the failed 2003 Nsimbe housing project. CHILD THEFT CASE: The High Court in Kampala yesterday heard that a couple and Mulago National Referral Hospital have failed to settle a child theft case out of court. Court records show that the couple Michael Mubangizi and Jennifer Musimenta, after giving birth to twins, was given one child by the hospital. The couple also accuses the hospital of denying them access to medical records regarding the birth of their twins, and also for allegedly taking away one of them without their permission.
