ELEPHANTS NOW A FRIGHTENED SPECIES Some years back, a woman in northern Kenya was sleeping under a tree when, sensing a presence, she looked up to see a very large elephant staring at her. Terrified for her safety, she shut her eyes and did not move. Imagine her surprise when the elephants began screaming in mourning, as they do for their own dead, and covered her in branches in a sort of premature burial. The more we find out about elephants, the more intelligent we find them to be. Social, aware of their kin and clan, mourning their wounded and dead, visiting and caressing the bones of their ancestors, they seem so very much like humans....except that they are not cruel. They have, however, learned fear. Traumatized by poachers, they watch warily, or run away, and attack those they feel may harm them. What evil has been done to them! We must make amends, though it will take generations of elephants before the horror fades. But the first step is to save them from annihilation, to stop the slaughter. Help us to help the elephants! https://tinyurl/m3qz54m Steve McNallen, Director Forever Elephants
