EN - #SpringForward for #Women - #DEVE Committee on Development Chair Linda McAvan Mep - Committee on Womens Rights and Gender Equality of the European Parliament 05.11: Thank you very much and thank you for inviting me to this gathering this morning. I think it is very impressive to see so many women in the room from so many different countries, and countries which, as you have said, Samira, are going through enormous change. And its good to see women coming forward in those countries, to take leadership positions and lead those countries into a better future. So, I am very pleased to be here today, my name is Linda McAvan. I am the Chair of the Development Committee in the European Parliament, and you mentioned the issues of the gender perspective of development, and I want to say I intend, I know I have the support of colleagues like Heidi Hautala, to make gender issues a extremely important part of our work, we will try and make sure we integrated into preparations for 2015, as you know, next year, a big debate in the UN on the post-2015 agenda to replace the development goals with new sustainable development goals, ad we need to make sure that gender perspective are pushed in that and in equality as well, which is a huge issue for many of us in this room. But today I wont talk about development policy but about how I got into politics, and what its like to be a woman in politics in the European Parliament.
