ESCAPE BY TRAIN 1903 Ethel Hall was an inmate at the Ararat - TopicsExpress

ESCAPE BY TRAIN 1903 Ethel Hall was an inmate at the Ararat Lunatic Asylum. Every day as Hall was outside in the airing yards she would listen to the steam trains coming and going from Ararat. The engines steam whistles as the train was arriving and departing the town would echo around the Asylum. Hall very quickly worked out the time table for the trains heading to Adelaide and those heading to Melbourne. Hall managed to scale the ha ha wall and hiding in long grass waited for the Melbourne train. As the train left Ararat and wasnt at full speed, Hall was able to run beside the train and climb aboard were she sat on the buffer of a carriage all the way to North Melbourne. Hall was found wondering around North Melbourne Station in a dazed state, dressed in dark, travel-stained garments, and with her face soiled with dust and soot. Hall was taken to the Melbourne Gaol hospital and when put to bed it was discovered that she was wearing an asylum garment. Hall was sent back to Ararat Asylum. Up to midnight she had not spoken a word, though she had eaten a little food. It has since been announced that the woman escaped from the Ararat Lunatic Asylum.
