Each week, We would like to highlight Artists that standout, give back, and are recommended by our followers. This weeks highlighted Food Artist has a huge following and has been recommended by many of our artists for her uplifting attitude and generosity. Lets show some love to Mayen Orido of Way Beyond Cakes, LLC!!!! Mayens Story: I am 37 years old, married for 12 years to Jim and mother to two wonderful kids, Jared, 7 and Aika, 3. I was born and raised in the Philippines and migrated to the USA 10 years ago. Im a US citizen now but will be working towards getting a dual citizenship in the next couple of years so I am still connected to my home country that way. I came from a science background , and taught biology and chemistry for a year and then switched to pharmaceutical sales , and that lasted for over 10 years. Although I loved my job a lot, time came when I had to resign because my shoulders could not handle the daily lifting required for my massive samples. (* do you know Similac, the infant formula ? my whole garage was filled with cans of it. Abbott laboratories loved to sample people ) Anyway, my decision to resign was also paired with my want to stay at home with our son, who was then 8 months old. I made my very first cake - literally , baked my very first cake -- when he turned 9 months I was hooked from the start , and always saw myself wanting to improve and wanting the next cake to look just a tad better than the previous one I made. I experimented with making cakes for the public for a good while and when we moved to Arizona ( from Maryland ) , I focused more on teaching and using my time to attend to my little online store , and making new projects. I guess when someone gets to see a bit of my story, I would always want to say that I am a product of sheer will to try something new. I was never artistic growing up, I never liked baking either. It was not me - I was a science nerd and I loved being buried in books. But once I got the urge to try - and I failed a TON of times --- my mindset , is that if I stop, then Id always be in the same place ... so when I wanted to learn about cake, I just had to keep on going. I may not have inborn talent, but I have determination to learn. A lot of newer platforms today have made learning about cake a lot easier than it was 7 years ago. And I love that it is open and encouraging most times. And I have that belief that the world is SO big, that all artists can get along and spread some love and inspiration through what we do . Cake has brought amazing things in my life - it has enabled me to be a stay at home mom ( first !) and manage a home business at the same time. Cake has given me a new perspective in life and has connected me to people all over the world that I would not have had contact with otherwise. Cake has taken me to far away places that I can only dream of , and has allowed my little experiments to be taught in countries I have always wanted to visit. It widened my world and enriched my life .
