Early in their marriage, if not before the wedding, a couple should look at each other in the eye and solemnly agree, Divorce is not an option. If both spouses own this commitment, if they truly lock that door once and for all, they will have made tremendous progress in building a marriage to last a lifetime. The benefits of such a commitment are immediate: both partners experience a sense of security, a sense that their hearts are protected, that their relationship can be trusted and that there is hope for the future. Over time, each spouse will feel free to spend mental and emotional energy focusing on problem-solving rather than worrying about being abandoned, or entertaining motions of escape. And the end result is a satisfying life long union. The Lord will honor your commitment, because you are aligning your will squarely with His. He will help you keep it - through prayer, through His Word, through the Council of godly people, and through His personal help - offering guidance and wisdom far beyond your own. He will bless you for your faithfulness. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised (Hebrews 10:36). God will surely see that you both get the reward you have earned. What about you? Have you committed yourself to marriage for life? Let your spouse know.
