East Yorkshire patients amongst best protected in country Figures released by Public Health England earlier this month show that hospital patients in East Yorkshire were amongst the best protected in the country this winter when it came to seasonal flu. Having reached the end of the traditional flu season, Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust is shown to be amongst the best performing NHS organisations in the country for uptake of the seasonal flu jab. The data reveals that more than four in every five members of frontline healthcare staff (82.6%) took up the vaccine this year, representing more than 6,700 people working across the Trust’s hospital sites. With a wide range of staff, from surgeons to ward clerks, and nurses to therapists taking up this vital protection, the Trust has been able to improve on its 2012/13 total of 80.7%, and is a mere 4% shy of the best performing Trust in England. Carole Hunter, Head of Occupational Health for the Trust is delighted with the result. She says: “We had an incredible response to our flu vaccination campaign this winter, and it’s pleasing to see that our staff, over and above many others across the country, have recognised the importance of the jab and opted to receive it, thereby protecting their patients, themselves and their loved ones. “We can attribute this success, at least in part, to making the vaccine readily available to our employees, and our team of 24hr volunteer vaccinators played a key role in ensuring that whenever and wherever our staff wanted the jab, they were able to receive it. “As well as helping to protect the health of patients, staff and visitors this winter, our high uptake rate has also helped us to make it through some very challenging peaks in demand for hospital services over recent months. Whilst seasonal flu has, of course, been doing the rounds, our high uptake of flu vaccinations, coupled with rigorous infection control procedures and regular handwashing, have all served to limit the impact flu has had within our hospitals.” The figures released by Public Health England show Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust to be the third best performing NHS Trust in the country out of 269 Trusts, including hospital, mental health, community and ambulance service Trusts.
