El ROI. My God who sees me. Please note how he met her physical needs while alone on the desert. EL ROI (Hebrew, meaning “The God Who Watches Over Me” or “The God Who Sees Me”) In Genesis 16:1-16 we read a tender story of a slave girl “given” by her mistress to her mistress’ husband with the express purpose of conceiving an heir. However, once she does conceive, her mistress’ jealousy is aroused and the pregnant slave girl is sent away to die in the desert. In her desperate state, the Lord appears to her, comforts her, sustains her physical needs, and reassures her of the child’s destiny. In verse 13 we read, “She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me,’ for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me.’ “ Today is a funeral for a dear friend of mine. She was only 39 years old, mother of two children under 10, one of the most charismatic people I have ever known. Her smile lit up a room; her laughter was magnetic, and her love for Jesus was infectious! She fought a long, difficult battle with cancer and she has now gained her victory – she is dancing with her King in Heaven, free from pain forevermore! But we grieve today. We question, “Why, God?” If anyone has ever believed more strongly and confidently for their physical healing, I have never met them. Wouldn’t she have been able to do so much more for the Kingdom if you had healed her and left her here? Many questions. Many tears. And yet, we must trust God’s sovereignty and rest in the hope that our definition of healing is too small! She did receive the ultimate healing – and victory. But I am comforted by focusing my eyes on EL ROI, the God Who Sees Me. Lord, you see me today. You see the friends and family of this dear friend. You see her children. You see the grief. And You comfort, You offer hope, You offer healing and life eternal. Thank you. I praise Your name. What are you facing today? Physical decline, financial hardship, marital shipwrecks? EL ROI sees…and He loves you. Turn to Him. Call out to Him. He is the all-knowing, all-seeing God. Read Psalm 139 and contemplate how completely God sees you!
