This is not the end of the world, and sounds a lot more like someone dropped the diplomatic ball than anything else. Still not good - this administrations foreign policy seems to lurch between incompetence and indecision, and missing this event looks like more of the same. Id be a lot more indignant, except for two things. First, participation would have made it seem like the US was patting France on the head: There, there, youre doing a good job with those terrorists. In fact, you could argue that distancing itself from France, a very troubled ally, was not a bad thing. Second, the real tragedy is that Obama, for all his vaunted ties to - and concern for - Africa, did NOT have much at all to say about the 2000 dead in the Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria, an ally whose strategic importance to the United States may in some ways be greater than that of France.
