Emergency Operations Center Update for October 9, 2013 Rapid City, S.D. - As of 9 a.m., the City and County agencies continue to respond to issues related to the winter storm Atlas. Responding agencies transitioned from storm response to recovery, with a main focus on restoring power, clearing roads, and removing debris. Roads: · Rapid City roads are passable. People are encouraged to use caution as they travel through the city due to hanging branches and downed tree debris. · All county maintained roads have at least one lane open except the very east end of County Road. This does not include township roads, district roads or maintained subdivision roads. Power: · Please be patient as crews are continuing to work to restore service to all customers. · Yield to power crews in the roadway and allow them to work. · Residents may continue to experience intermittent power outages as crews work to reenergize the system. · Homeowners with damage to their power meter mast will need to have a licensed electrician repair the damaged mast before power can be restored to their home. · The City is waiving the normally required electrical inspection for repairs on electrical masts for up to 30 days. · Officials are urging residents to stay away from down power lines. They are located at: Central State Fairgrounds Fitzgerald Stadium (off Sheridan Lake Road) Civic Center Overflow Parking Lot (off 5th Street) Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Residents are asked to cut branches to a length of 6 feet or less. · The Landfill is NOT accepting brush and limbs at this time. Residents taking branch debris to the landfill we will re-directed to a branch drop off site. Safety: · Be Cautious around fallen or partially fallen trees. · Do not let children play around or near fallen trees and or debris. · As schools start to open remind your children to stay away from all downed power lines. · As the snow melts, standing water and flooding issues are a concern. Residents who must drive are urged to be careful and watch for standing water on the road. Do not try to drive through standing water. · When clearing snow and tree debris, make sure fire hydrants remain clear and accessible. · Residents shoveling and working to clear to snow and debris from their property should be careful not to overexert themselves. Be wary of exhaustion; take breaks and stay hydrated. · People who have been without power should consider the safety of their food. Residents are asked to stay away from the bike path. · The Rapid City Pennington County Water Rescue Team has been put on notice for possible flooding and/or water damage issues due to the rapidly melting snow and run off. Pennington County residents impacted by the recent Black Hills snow storm can call the Helpline Center’s hotline by dialing 2-1-1 for storm information, resources and support. If you have questions or need resources for storm-related issues such as debris removal, electrical repairs, roof damage, basic needs such as food, shelter, or animal removal from agricultural properties, just dial 2-1-1. Callers experiencing emotional distress can also call for listening and support or to find counseling resources. Agencies needing volunteers, and volunteers wanting to help, should dial 2-1-1 for assistance.
